Trevor Turns 1!
Some shopping centres open a new travelator quietly.
Townsville gave ours a name, a song, a cake and a grand opening worthy of a local legend.
On 16 August 2025, Trevor the Travelator officially began rolling near Woolworths following one of the biggest infrastructure upgrades in Townsville Shopping Centre’s history.
What began as an essential replacement quickly became something much bigger: a true Townsville community story filled with humour, local pride and plenty of unforgettable moments.
Almost one year later, Trevor is still doing exactly what he was made to do — helping make every visit just that little bit easier.
Where it all began
After 37 years and eight trips around the world
Since Townsville Shopping Centre first opened, the original travelators near Woolworths had faithfully carried generations of shoppers up and down the centre.
Over almost four decades, they travelled the equivalent of approximately eight trips around the Earth’s equator.
They had well and truly earned their retirement. To keep Townsville moving smoothly, it was time to welcome a modern replacement.
Meet the birthday boy
Enter Trevor the Travelator
Installed by local team CES Construction, the new travelator may have arrived shiny and modern, but it still needed one very important thing: a name.
Together with Star 106.3, Townsville locals were invited to get involved. The community rallied behind the name Trevor, transforming a piece of everyday infrastructure into one of the city’s most unexpected local personalities.
Before long, Trevor had become part of the Townsville Shopping Centre family.

A very Townsville celebration
A grand opening like no other
There was no chance Trevor would begin his first official journey with an ordinary ribbon-cutting.
In the weeks leading up to the launch, Archie and Donny from Star 106.3 brought Trevor’s story to life through breakfast radio antics, a moving poem for the retiring travelators and a community vote celebrating local Townsville legends.
On the big day, the centre came alive with a specially baked cake, the Townsville Brass Band, bagpipes, mascots, VIP guests, Townsville Rockers dancers and a song written especially for Trevor and performed by NQ Opera and Music.
The celebration finished with 89-year-old footy tipping star Roy officially declaring Trevor open at 9am on Saturday 16 August 2025.
